Suppliers of fishery products to the EU, and perhaps elsewhere, and who wish
to use Fish Plus should check that sorbate is a permitted additive in their
products. My reading of EU Council Directive 95/2/EC of 20 February 1995 on
food additives other than colours and sweeteners is that sorbates are not
permitted as an additive in fish products other than some processed fishery
products. Sorbic acid, sodium sorbate, and potassium sorbate, E200, 201, and
202 respectively, are not listed in Annexe I of the Directive, additives
generally permitted for use in foodstuffs. They appear in Annexe III,
conditionally permitted preservatives and antioxidants where they are listed
as permitted in semi-preserved fish products, salted, dried fish, and cooked
shrimps. Polyphosphates are permitted additives in chilled and in frozen
fishery products.
