    TYPICAL DUTIES:

Nature of Position. This is a tenure-track faculty position with the
University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Fishery Industrial Technology
Center (FITC) in Kodiak, Alaska, whose mission is to increase the value
of Alaska's seafood industry. The purpose of this position in applied
research is to further FITC's mission through research, teaching and
service in sustainable fish harvesting and the responsible development
    of Alaska's marine resources.

Specific Responsibilities. The successful candidate will work closely
with Alaska's seafood industry to help solve specific seafood chemistry
issues in the areas of seafood safety, seafood quality, the effective
handling of processing wastes and marine contaminants. This is likely to
require the identification of small molecules useful in indicating
seafood freshness and the analysis of oxidative rancidity in fish
lipids. Other areas of importance include analytical approaches to
naturally occurring toxins such as paralytic shellfish poison as well as
man-made contaminants, and potentially the chemical analysis of fish
hydrolysate as a substrate for bioreactors and as a component for making
    animal feeds.

General Responsibilities. Develop a funded research program in seafood
chemistry as applied to the seafood industry and marine resources in
Alaska, while serving the needs of the coastal communities. A
significant portion of the job involves a public service component in
helping others solve their problems. The successful candidate will work
as part of our multidisciplinary approach to problem solving. Other
responsibilities include teaching formal and informal classes
appropriate to seafood technology as well as training and supervising
    graduate students.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge: The successful candidate will have a strong background in
food chemistry, food science and nutrition, expertise in modern
laboratory equipment as well as experimental design, statistics and some
    knowledge of fisheries.

Skills Required: Demonstrated research, publishing and public speaking
record and the ability to design and implement experimental studies.
Grantsmanship as appropriate to the specific candidate's level must also
be demonstrated. Experience with chemical theory, food science and
nutrition, laboratory methods, and the ability to work effectively with
    the public is crucial.

Skills Desirable: Familiarity with seafood and the issues surrounding
Alaska's commercial fisheries. Some knowledge of fisheries and seafood
    processing is very desirable.

Abilities: Position requires a person with initiative to insure timely
completion of projects. Additionally, the successful candidate will
interact positively with interested parties from many walks of life. We
seek a self-starter who will work collaboratively.

Education: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition or
Analytical Chemistry with an emphasis on Food Science, or an appropriate
related discipline at the time of appointment.

APPLICATION: Please submit a signed University of Alaska Employment
Application, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, copies of
representative publications, and statements of teaching, research and
service interests that explain how your experience will assist you in
meeting the responsibilities of the position. Mail application to:
