A new report, "Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury," from the National
Academies' National Research Council indicates that while the U.S. EPA's
guideline for protecting the public from a toxic form of mercury is
justifiable based on the latest scientific evidence, some children of
women who consume large amounts of fis and seafood during pregnancy may be
at special risk of neuroogical problems. At the request of Congress, the
Research Council provides independent, scientific advice in establishing
appropriate exposure limits for methylmercury.
Copies of the report, "Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury," will be
available at the end of August from the National Academy Press. A press
