    Dear Peter:

Thank you for your reply. I would be very interested in any study you know of
dealing with "restricted locations". Collective population statistics are
interesting but are of little value. Lets assume that if I ask a question I
am looking for an answer due to my own lack of knowledge. Are there
populations in specific localities in Russia that sustain themselves largely
on a diet of YPS brined and smoked fish products such as herring?

Many people have responded to my questions indirectly rather than to expose
themselves to some of the ridicule you may have seen on this list server
concerning this topic in the past. I am thankful for their inquiries,
suggestions, as well as their criticisms. I would prefer an open discussion
but the owners of this list have made it clear that in their opinion my
questions are not relevant and I should confine my questions to a scientific
community. I respect their opinions and I have limited my questions to these
general topics when they are needed.

Wieand Fisheries is a private consulting group whose mission is to advise its
established clients with information relevant to the fishing industry. Our
staff collects and in some cases sponsors detailed studies to best advise our
clients weekly on fishing industry trends and advances in technology. We are
not seeking any new clients nor do we endorse any commercial products.

You asked me for a summary of these off line discussions. I think I can do
this in a general way but before I do let me say that four weeks ago I
advised my clients to seek out salts that have no YPS additives in them. The
effect of this suggestion will be noticed in the near future as it is
implemented. It was a difficult recommendation to make for as we all know YPS
is an industry standard and non YPS salts are difficult to come by.

The topic of safety was the greatest concern. Most of the scientific studies
relating to YPS and the compounds it forms come from the mining industry. The
body of these studies deal with immediate life and death issues from lethal
exposures. Very few studies have been done on long term exposure. YPS seems
to be one of those additives that was just excepted as safe by agencies such
as the FDA without any detailed examination of compounds formed and retained
in human tissues such as the heart, liver, lungs, and skin pores. These
issues were deemed to be "too scientific and technical" for this list so they
are being pursued and actively discussed elsewhere.

Other concerns were raised outside of the safety realm. Some of the topics
included shelf life, lipid oxidation, enzyme production, specific bacteria,
freezing characteristics, generation of ammonia compounds, drip, appearance,
increased loading of heavy metals, various oxygen barrier films, anti
oxidants and their effects on bound cyanide compounds, and weight retention.
My firm is now seeking alternatives to the general practice and has initiated
    testing to find these alternatives.

Safety is at the core of all of our work but so are profits. It really
doesn't make sense to continue using products that obliterate both of these
    objectives.

    Regards,
