Dear recipient,
As you may know, FAO keeps a so-called Corporate Roster of Experts. This is a computerized list which is consulted when experts are needed for a given task somewhere in the world as well as when potential candidates are identified for longer-term recruitment by FAO. FAO is in the process of re-designing entirely the system.
In the meantime, we in the Fisheries Department of FAO, have been looking into the possibility to use - in addition to this Roster - a system run by UNESCO which is called "Global Directory of Marine and Freshwater Professionals: (GLODIR). This is a web-based system where experts sign on themselves through the web and maintain their own registration updated themselves. This system already holds records of some 10 000 experts but mostly in biological sciences.
Recently the IOC has made significant improvements to the system. It seems to us that it is now working very well for having an overview of expertise in the various fields. At the moment, however, there is the problem that the system contains very few entries in many of the technical fields we are interested in.
In order to test the potential of GLODIR for FAO's purpose we would like to ask those of you who would consider working as FAO consultants or staff members, to register with the system as soon as possible. In the next few weeks we will be monitoring the increase in candidates corresponding to our needs.
