    To Seafood List:

I usually have about 50 messages to wade through in the morning when I
    come to work.

Thanks to Message #26 from Mr. A. Suarez, an east coast subscriber with a
3-hour lead time, for first alerting me to the pretty park virus
circulating on the seafood listserv. And thanks also to Jay Harlow for
posting the McAfee site on how to disinfect your computer system. I was
in the process of trying to locate and post the McAfee site when Jay's
    message came through.

Information on the virus is summarized at the end of this message.

Initially, I thought that I was personally hit with the virus because it
went to a group e-mail address (unfamiliar to me) in Mexico and did not
feature the "seafood@ucdavis.edu" list. It was not until I received Mr.
Suarez's message that I realized the virus was from an insider who is
    now a permanent outsider.

Since Jay quickly got the message across on how to disinfect, I was busy
    1) permanently removing the subscriber's and the mailbox@bermejo.cibnor.mx
addresses from our listserv and 2) notifying our postmaster to remove the
virus from our archived files on the web and to complain to the
    postmaster in Mexico.

Our office takes viruses very seriously...especially when they appear to
    be intentionally mailed.

Because this listserv is open to subscribers to freely exchange
information, we trust our subscribers not to subvert the integrity of the
seafood listserv. When abuse occurs, retribution is swift.

    Information on the virus:

The virus is harmless until you open it. This worm will try to email
itself automatically every 30 minutes to all email addresses listed in the
Windows address book associated with Outlook Express. This is an Internet
worm that installs on Windows 9x/NT systems. It arrives via email from
affected users who have also run this Internet worm. It appears as an icon
of a character from the animated comedy series "Southpark". Emails
containing this Internet worm have this format:
    -------------
    Subject: C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe

    Test: Pretty Park.exe :)
