ALASKA AIRLINE CONFERENCE RATES:
If you are traveling to the PFT Annual Meeting using Alaska Airlines
only or Horizon Air plus Alaska Airlines only you are eligible for a
conference fare reduction of 5 percent. This is good on any ticket
except the promotional companion fare. To obtain this 5 percent
reduction you must use the designator CMR 4066 (this must appear in the
fare basis box).
For each 25 tickets that use CMR 4066, we will be given one free ticket.
Any free tickets we receive will be awarded to students making
presentations at the meeting. If you use CMR 4066, please send me your
name and ticket number.
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS:
We currently have about 60 percent of the papers we need for the two and
a half days of presentations. Therefore we are extending the Abstracts
Due and Student Extended Abstracts Due dates to March 1. Please consult
the FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS for the list of appropriate topics and more
information about the abstract and time allotted for each presentation.
Let me know if you need a copy of the FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS and the
Meeting Planning Information Form.
STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION:
The student paper competition will provide travel assistance for at
least two student presenters. The award will consist of an Alaska
Airlines-Horizon Air ticket or a cash award of $350. We will assist as
many students as possible with a ticket or cash award. The number will
depend on whether we get free tickets from Alaska Airlines and whether
we get meeting sponsors.
All student paper abstracts will be entered in the competition. We
encourage students to send an extended abstract. An extended abstract
includes a brief summary of each section of the presentation (sections
might be Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions).
It may also include tables and figures. If students send only a one
page abstract, it will be used for the competition but an extended
abstract will likely receive a higher ranking.
NEETS BAY SALMON HATCHERY TOUR:
The salmon hatchery tour will be on March 26 (Sunday). The Neets Bay
Hatchery is one of three hatcheries operated by the Southern Southeast
Regional Aquaculture Association, Inc. (SSRA pronounced "sara"). SSRA
is a State of Alaska qualified non-profit aquaculture corporation. Their
mission is to enhance and rehabilitate salmon production in Southeast
Alaska to the optimum social and economic benefit of salmon users.
Their goal is to enhance production through natural and artificial
means, with 75 percent of all enhanced salmon harvested by users. The
Neets Bay Hatchery is sited at the head of the bay, 40 miles north of
Ketchikan. The hatchery, accessible by boat or aircraft, is a
production facility concentrating on chum, coho, and chinook salmon. It
was built in 1983-1984. An average yearly release numbers 70 million
salmon fry. Chum broodstock are reared at Neets Bay, which is also the
primary site for SSRA's cost-recovery operations.
The boat charted for the field trip to Neets Bay is operated by
Southeast Stevedoring. It will leave Ketchikan at 10:00 a.m. and will
stop at the airport to pick up people who arrive Sunday morning on AS 65
from Seattle or AS 60 from Juneau. The boat will arrive back at
Ketchikan at about 5:00 p.m. Cost is $75. The boat trip will be
cancelled if less than 12 people have signed up and paid by March 15,
2000.
The plane(s) for the Neets Bay trip are operated by Promech Air. Leave
time from Ketchikan will be 12:30 p.m. The plane(s) will stop at the
airport to pick up people who arrive Sunday morning on AS 65 from
Seattle or AS 60 or 62 from Juneau and Sitka. Cost will vary from $120
to $150 depending on the number of people who make the trip. The
plane(s) will be back in Ketchikan at about 2:30 p.m.
SEAFOOD PROCESSING PLANTS TOUR:
There is a $10 charge for the seafood processing plants tour. Two
plants (Silver Lining and E.C. Phillips & Son) have agreed to provide a
tour and we are in negotiations with a third. Silver Lining has a
retail store for those who want to purchase Alaska seafood products. The
bus will leave the hotel at 1:00 p.m. and the tour will be complete by
4:30 p.m. The bus will deliver people who are departing on AS 64 for
Seattle to the airport ferry in time to make this flight. It will
deliver those who are leaving on AS 67 to the airport ferry during the
second plant tour.
PFT CONFERENCE SPONSORS:
If any companies, organizations, or individuals are willing to be
conference sponsors, please contact me. We have kept conference costs
as low as possible, especially for students. Consequently, we have no
extra funds to support students or invited speakers. We need sponsors
for students, the keynote speaker, and the banquet speaker. All
conference sponsors will be acknowledged in the printed program and at
all conference functions.
