Dear Jeurgen,
At Billingsgate market we often have farmed european freshwater catfish. It is sold and labelled as catfish. The market for it is small but slowly growing. As far as I am aware it is sold as catfish on the european market. Under the food labelling regulations of 1996 any member of the ictaluridae must be labelled as catfish.
With regard to marine catfish, under the regulations they can be referred to as either catfish or rockfish.
This means that in the UK it would be illegal to market them by any other name.
I am sorry to give you this disappointing news. Unfortunately, all you can do is keep plugging away, slowly making inroads into the market and eventually overcoming the public prejudice to a name.
I hope this information is useful to you.
Regards
Chris Leftwich
Chief Inspector, Billingsgate market
