Apalachicola Bay Oysters Recalled for Contamination
Atlanta, GA (SafetyAlerts <http://www.safetyalerts.com/Default.htm>) -
Certified Shellfish dealers in Georgia have been notified to remove from
distribution and/or sale oysters in the shell (shell stock) and shucked
oysters harvested during the period of January 4 through 21, 2000 from the
Cat Point area of Apalachicola Bay (identified and tagged as area 1642) and
to notify all of their retailers to return the products because of possible
contamination.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services health
epidemiologist has determined that oysters harvested from this area were
associated with recent clusters of food borne illness caused by Norwalk
Virus.
This virus is usually a self-limited, mild to moderate disease that often
occurs in outbreaks, with clinical symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
abdominal pain, headache, low-grade fever or a combination of these
symptoms. The gastro-intestinal symptoms usually last 24-48 hours. This
disease sometimes gets transmitted because oysters become contaminated with
human fecal material that carries the virus.
For additional information contact the Florida Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services at (850) 488-5471.
