Recognized procedures shall be used in the assays for paralytic
shellfish poison (PSP) and Gymnodinium breve toxin(s) [formerly
Ptychodiscus brevis toxin(s), ciguatera poison, ciguatera-like toxin]
(1, 2, 3, 4).
Procedures and methods can be found:
a. Current Association of Official Analytical (formerly
Agricultural) Chemists (AOAC) and APHA official methods are followed in
the bioassay for PSP (2, 3).
b. APHA methods are followed in the bioassay for Gymnodinium
breve toxin(s) (2).
It has been demonstrated that significant variations in bioassay results
will be caused by minor changes in procedures. If reliable results are
to be obtained it is essential that the test procedures be standardized
and that variations due to use of different strains of mice be minimized
(5). The official procedure for the bioassay for PSP adopted by the AOAC
and the APHA methods specified for the bioassay for Gymnodinium breve
toxin(s), minimize these variations (2, 3).
