Washington State University Approves The Nation’s First Organic Agriculture Major
Responding to the tremendous growth in organic food sales, Washington State University (WSU) will become the nation’s first university to offer a major in organic agriculture. There’s a great deal of industry interest in the new major, says the coordinator of the new degree program, Cathy Perillo. Large corporations are interested in meeting the nation’s growing appetite for organic foods, and they’re seeking employees who understand organic agriculture. The major has a hands-on component, as students will spend a summer working on WSU’s organic farm, where they will plant, nurture, harvest, and market organic produce.
