    NDA Meeting Minutes
    Monday, March 6

    NDA Announcements:

    1. NDA Officer Elections and/or appointments
    ~ will be held during 1st or 2nd meeting of spring quarter
    ~ earn valuable leadership skills!
    ~ officer positions are: president, vice president, publicity, treasurer,
    secretary
    ~ no previous experience needed, just interest and enthusiasm!
    2. T-shirts are still available for $14.

    We brainstormed some ideas for a web site on Training and Career Development
    for public health consultants from WIC who showed up and requested our
    input.

    Speaker: Michelle Lites, RD, Health Education Council of Sacramento
    Topic: Promoting Nutrition to Schools and Students

    Her Background:
    ~ did a coordinated undergraduate program (Dietetic Internship included) at
    Louisiana Tech
    ~ 1st job: $19,500/yr.
    ~ worked as a clinical dietitian, small and large hospitals
    ~ worked for a management company
    ~ managed 30 food service employees at UCDMC catering department
    ~ worked in cardiac rehab

    Working for Health Education Council:
    ~ worked on Project LEAN (Leaders Encourage Activities in Nutrition) with
    UCDMC, a public health program that targets high school kids
    ~ manages 4 different state-funded nutrition grants
    ~ coordinates nutrition programs:
    Food on the Run – teaches lessons to high school kids, seeks teen input on
    policy
    California Nutrition Network – geared to low-income women
    5 A Day Power Play – promotes eating at least 5 fruit and veggies per day,
    targeted to kids
    ~ works in the field also
    ~ lots of “coalition building”
    ~ works about 55 hrs/week (on salary)
    ~ currently earns $41,000/yr. (compare to $45,000-55,000 after 10 years in
    clinical)

    Her Advice and Words of Wisdom:
    ~ recommends building a file of nutrition education materials for yourself
    so will have resources in the future
    ~ food service management is balancing food, nutrition, money and dealing
    with employees -- attitude is important
    ~ at state level offices, Master’s generally required
    ~ you will start at the same pay scale with or without a Master’s
    ~ without an RD, you’ll make half the money an RD would
    ~ the decision to get an MS or MPH should be based on what you like
    ~ it’s not hard to find jobs, it depends on what you’re willing to do
    ~ expect to change jobs every 5 years
    ~ anywhere you work, get a letter of recommendation
    ~ the challenge is finding the job you want with the salary you want

    day of the week.

    Internships with Health Education Council are available through ICC – good
    for self-initiators.
