NDA Announcements
I. Nutrition News is now available across from MU Info Desk and 1st floor
of Meyer
II. 2 paid internships counseling overweight kids at UCDMC

III. Scholarship applications for winter quarter are available
1. due March 6th at third NDA meeting of quarter
2. NDA involvement and last open-ended question are heavily weighted in
decision-making process

Topic: Campus research opportunities available through the Nutrition
Department
Research Classes:
NUT 199 (variable units, P/NP) or NUT 130 (2 units, graded)
for 1 unit, 3 hours/week for 2 units, 6 hours/week
I. Research is either lab work or human/clinical oriented
Typical Lab Work Activities:
- weigh reagents, make solutions
- simple assays
- learn to use equipment
- feed/weigh lab animals
- make up animal diets
Typical Human/Clinical Work Activities
- enter dietary data for nutritional analysis
- call subjects for screening, scheduling or follow-up
- food prep. for feeding studies
- anthropometric data
- help organize human specimens (plasma, etc.)
II. What to Look For & Avoid in Research Experiences
1. What do you want out of the experience? Evaluate your own goals.
2. Look for hands-on experience, not just observation
3. Look for a situation where lab tech./grad student/professor will explain
the project to you so you can get the big picture of your role in the
research
4. Be proactive in trying to find the right experience for you

anthropometric measures, dealing with study subjects/public (human research)

6. good experience to list on applications
7. may help you sort out your career goals
8. broadens your university experience
