Summer Sessions Abroad for 2002 is offering, among other courses,
"International Nutrition Assessment" in Peru, June 16-July 27, 2002. This
course will provide you with direct exposure to nutritional problems of
low-income populations and first-hand experience in the application of
nutritional assessment techniques, design and implementation of a
community-based survey, and analysis and interpretations.
During the first two weeks in Lima, you will participate in background
lectures and laboratory exercises in which you will develop a survey
instrument, practice and standardize the data collections techniques, and
prepare an electronic data base for subsequent processing of the survey
information.
During the second two weeks, you will travel to a field site in the central
Andean highlands (Callejon de Huaylas, Dept of Ancash) to collect
anthropometric, dietary and other survey data in the study communities.

Professor Brown is a pediatrician who conducts research on childhood
malnutrition in low-income countries, with emphasis on infant feeding
practices, micronutrient deficiencies,and nutrition in the prevention and
treatment of infections. Professor Brown lived in Lima for five years and
continues to collaborate on projects in Peru.
