    The Summer Sessions Abroad Office has an exciting opportunity for you to
    study International Nutrition in Lima, Peru this summer! Please read the

    Lima, Perú - International Nutrition Assessment
    Nutrition 119B (6 units)
    Nutrition 198 (2 units)

    Program Date: June 16 - July 27

    Instructor
    Kenneth H. Brown, Ph.D.
    Professor Brown is a pediatrician who conducts research on childhood
    malnutrition in low-income countries, with emphasis on infant feeding
    practices, micronutrient deficiencies (zinc, iron, and vitamin A), and
    nutrition in the prevention and treatment of infections. Professor Brown
    lived in Lima for five years and continues to collaborate on projects in Peru.

    Total Fees
    $2,915 (single occupancy) or
    $2,505 (double occupancy)
    The total includes tuition, accommodation and miscellaneous fees.

    Recommended On-Site Budget: $1,500 - $2,000

    Course Description
    The course will provide you with direct exposure to nutritional problems of
    low-income populations and first-hand experience in the application of
    nutritional assessment techniques, design and implementation of a
    community-based survey, and analysis and interpretation of the survey results.

    During the first two weeks in Lima, you will participate in background
    lectures and laboratory exercises in which you will develop a survey
    instrument, practice and standardize the data collection techniques, and
    prepare an electronic
    data base for subsequent processing of the survey information.

    During the second two weeks, you will travel to a field site in the central
    Andean highlands (Callejon de Huaylas, Department of Ancash) to collect
    anthropometric, dietary and other survey data in the study communities.

    During the last two weeks, you will return to Lima to analyze the data and
    prepare a summary report.

    Grading
    Nutrition 119B carries 6 units of credit and may be taken for a letter
    grade or a Passed/Not Passed grade based on the following:

    20% Classroom and laboratory exercises, and participation
    60% Field work exercises, data processing and analysis,
    and performance
    20% Final Report

    Nutrition 198 carries 2 units of credit to be graded on a Passed/Not Passed
    basis.

    Required Texts
    Selected chapters will be assigned from the following texts:

    * Gibson, R.S. Principles of Nutritional Assessment
    * Smith, P.G. & Morrw, R.H. (eds.) Methods for Field Trials of
    Interventions Against Tropical Diseases: A Tool Box
    * WHO Technical Report Series. Physical Status: The Use and
    Interpretation of Anthropometry. (No 854)

    Class Schedule
    In Lima, the class/lab will meet for 4-5 hours daily and the instructors
    will be available for several hours thereafter to assist with homework
    assignments, as needed.

    Field Schedule
    On the field site, you will spend approximately 12 hours per day visiting
    local homes on those days that the survey is being conducted.
    Transportation to and from the field site and the local communities will be
    arranged. You will be guided by local experts in nutritional assessment and
    individuals familiar with the study communities.

    Accommodations
    Lima
    Hotel accommodations will be reserved in the Miraflores district of Lima.
    Single and double rooms with baths will be available.

    Huaraz
    During your short stay outside of Lima, you will stay in a hotel in the
    city of Huaraz in the Callejon de Huaylas. You will have a choice of a
    single or double occupancy room.

    Meals
    Lima
    Breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are on your own and is available in
    local restaurants or as arranged through the hotel.
