Project: Measurement of body composition in infants (PEA POD study)

Project description:
This study will assess the accuracy of a new instrument for measuring body composition in infants, based on air displacement. A larger version, the BOD POD, designed for the assessment of body composition in adults, is frequently used here at UC Davis in classes, research and athletic programs.
Intern duties:
The intern will assist the project coordinator with measurements at the Ragle Human Nutrition Research Facility. This may include helping to set up supplies, assisting the mother with her infant and other children, writing down information, etc. The intern may restock publicity brochures at specified locations. The intern will also obtain urine samples from the infant by going out to the subject’s home on specified collection days.
Intern skills/job qualifications:
Experience with infants and children desired. Ability to establish a good rapport with mothers and be comfortable around them breastfeeding and expressing their breast milk is essential. Other desired qualities include attention to detail, professional, friendly attitude, and a willingness to learn quickly. Access to a car is highly desirable, as home visits are required.
Availability:
Data collection will be occurring every day of the week. Thus, we will be looking for 3-4 interns to each work 3 days per week, 2-2 ½ hours each day. You will receive 2 units of Nutrition 130 credit for volunteering. The study will start at the beginning of December, and you can receive the units for the winter quarter.
