In the recent PUR-cell or pur-CELL debate, someone mentioned that knowing how
to pronounce it was rather like knowing how to pronounce Professor
Kinkeldey's name -- sort of a musicological "secret handshake." Now I'm
concerned that I've learned it incorrectly and have been pronouncing it wrong
all these years. Anyone want to give the secret away?

In 1946-47 Otto Kinkeldey was Visiting Professor. Those of us who
were there that year will never forget his contribution.
