    Call for Papers

    An Interdisciplinary Conference

    John Eccles and His Contemporaries:
Theatre & Music in London, circa 1700
    February 24-27, 2005
    Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL

Scholars and performers working on topics related to the London theatre
world around the turn of the eighteenth century are invited to submit
abstracts for an interdisciplinary conference focusing on the work of the
composer, John Eccles. Anthony Rooley will highlight the conference by
directing historically-informed performances of works by Eccles and
    Congreve.

Of primary interest are the collaborations among Eccles, poet and
playwright William Congreve, and the actress-singer Anne Bracegirdle,
including The Judgment of Paris, Semele, and the Hymn to Harmony. Also of
interest are the editorial complexities of producing a complete scholarly
edition of Eccles's music. Topics need not be limited to Eccles:
proposals pertaining to theatre and music at the turn of the century are
also welcome. These should draw on the disciplines of theatre and dance
history, musicology, literature, drama, gender studies, performance
practice, performance studies or other relevant fields.

Abstracts (c. 250 words) should outline the proposed paper or
lecture-demonstration as fully as possible and include requests for any
needed audiovisual equipment. Papers will be limited to 30 minutes.

Abstracts should be sent via e-mail or post to:

    Dr. Amanda Eubanks Winkler
    308 Bowne Hall
    Department of Fine Arts
    Syracuse University
    Syracuse, NY 13210, USA

Abstracts must be received by May 15th to receive full consideration.
Participants will be notified by August 15, 2004.

If you have questions about the conference program, please contact one of
the following members of the program committee: Dr. Amanda Eubanks
Winkler, Chair, or Dr. Kathryn Lowerre (lowerre@msu.edu). Questions
regarding local arrangements should be addressed to Matthew Roberson
