Classical music in the Denver Colorado market is still going
strong, thanks to Public Radio. Here is a brief history of our
classical station KVOD. It was founded in 1943, and had no
problems until 1999. In August, some hotshot from the company
that owned the station, one Bob Visotsky, got involved. His
mission was apparently to whip the low-income stations into
line and toe the corporate line of some new consortium of
radio stations. He decided classical music was dead, stripped
KVOD of their 99.5 FM spot and replaced it with a "Jammin' Oldies"
format, as if we needed yet another one of those. KVOD was moved
to a low-power AM frequency 1280 to await their demise. The
public outcry was amazing here, but the radio companies would
not budge. In comes Public Radio, on their white horse, to
save the day. They bought the 1280 AM station. Then they moved
their public news and information channel that was on 90.1 FM
to the AM frequency and replaced 90.1 FM with KVOD, a full-time
24 hour classical station. That was a year ago, April 10, 2001.
The station now commands about 7% of the radio market in Denver,
which I would say is pretty good.
