There is more than one version of this story, even in the Israeli media.
According to an English-language Israel Radio broadcast about two hours
ago, Barenboim HIMSELF decided to cancel the concert after being warned
that his safety could not be guaranteed.
It seems to me that this matter may not be an appropriate topic for MLIST.
This list has never before discussed the politics of the Middle East -- an
extremely divisive issue having NOTHING to do with musicology, and one on
which MANY people have extremely strong feelings. Arguments over such a
topic could blow the list apart, ironically accompishing what some former
list members tried and failed to do.
I would suggest STRONGLY, therefore, that this *musicology* list is NOT
the place to discuss the politics of the Middle East. I would hope that we
could agree on that.
