Yesterday's edition of PBS's afternoon news program "All Things
Considered" included an interview with an actor (identified as a
lifelong fan of the former comedy team of Cheech and Chong)
who was about to appear on (Friday's) episode of the detective
show "Nash Bridges". "NB" stars Don Johnson, and Cheech Marin plays
his side-kick. The actor was to be featured in a shower scene
with Cheech. Shower scenes have become something of a cameo feature
on American TV in recent years, no matter how unesthetic the
objects of the inopportune encounter (viz., Dennis Franz on
"NYPD Blue"). The actor said that he was only going to be seen
from the rear, and from the waist down. He made some comments
meant to be amusing, but whatever wit he could muster was surpassed
by the supernally witty choice of segment-closing music, which was
an instrumental version of Thomas Moore's "The Minstrel Boy":
The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him.
His father's sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him.
