Glen:

There is a paperback that accompanies the ALR's that I think is useful.
Entitled "Electronic Search Queries and West Digest Key Numbers for
Annotations in ALR4th", it gives the title of an ALR annotation (which is
usually quite narrow and fact-specific) and then gives an example of the
Boolean search that the ALR author used to research the issue.

A handout for first-year students showing an example of a short Boolean
query and of a very long one helps them see get an idea that what is a
"good" Boolean query all depends. And possibly inspires them to browse the
book and look at more examples.
