Thanks to all of the colleagues who have replied to my inquiry about
requirements that patrons entering libraries in courthouses show
identification, sign in, etc. It appears that our situation is a little better
than it originally appeared--although I still don't like it. My initial inquiries to
our head of security about requiring identification apparently alerted him
that some people may show up without an ID, and the official policy now
excludes showing one. The signing in and wearing a tag still continues.
I particularly appreciate colleagues' comments about U.S. Government
Depository requirements and citizens' rights to access the law. One of
the saddest parts of this story is that I honestly think some of the justices
would put this policy in place totally forgot that the library and those who
use it were in the building under their chambers. I'm counting on some of
our patrons to remind them. Thanks to all. Carol
