I California, all the state agencies that I have checked use
.gov as in http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html
I am seeing the state designation plus US in other states. For
a quick survey I went to http://www.nass.org/members/members.htm
Hold your cursor over the state name and look at the location
bar at the bottom of your screen to see which state uses .US and
which use .GOV

My understanding re .gov has always been that it was assigned to *federal*
governmental organizations, departments, etc. States do not use .gov, to
the best of my (admitedly limited) knowledge.
Is that not the case?
