Re: Bankruptcy Software

This is a question that is posed and answered every few months on the
Roundtable bankruptcy law mailing list: see

http://bankrupt.com/discussion.round.htm

The two best recommended, by my recollection, were New Hope:

http://www.bankruptcysoftware.com/

and Best Case:

http://www.bestcase.com/

I have used Best Case (for 7s, 11s & 13s) and have no complaints, other
than the price. (Several contributors to the discussions have claimed
that they got discounts by way of competitive upgrades.) New Hope
users, however, tend give excited testimonials, not just express
satisfaction.

Most users of other software seemed to have a grievance or other. I
found Best Case provided excellent support. In fact, I used the
software for a cross-border bankruptcy project involving debtors in
many states, all with the same foreign creditor. Thus I needed
multi-state support (with respect to local forms, exemptions, etc.)
which I readily got.

I should note that I was unable to use Best Case on the network of a
particular law firm with which I worked on behalf of one debtor; but I
deduced that this was because the firm's software was archaic. We got
it working on a standalone basis on a laptop. I suspect that your
technical questions will be answered on the above web sites or by the
firms directly.

Of course if the new bankruptcy amendment bill becomes law, all new
forms will be needed. Best Case automatically gives you a one-year
service contract (you have to pay for further years). (Indeed, the
Roundtable lawyers are today speculating what other legal specialty
they can enter if, indeed, "the $62 million in campaign contributions
by the credit card lobby bears fruit" and consumer bankruptcies are
curtailed under the new law.)
