Have you noticed a lack of faith in the American judicial system? Do you
hear grumblings about the explosion of litigation, the inequality of justice
(where the rich seem to get away with everything while the poor don't?), and
a general disrespect of lawyers and judges? Members of our profession have
heard these complaints and are joining with other professional associations
to address these issues.
Some alarming statistics: Only 1 in 3 Americans agree that taking a case to
court is affordable. Nearly 9 out 10 point to the cost of legal
representation as the main barrier. Other barriers include the slow pace of
justice, complexity of the law, and the amount of personal time required.
These perceptions can and do have a tremendous affect on the way the public
views justice, don't they?
AALL is holding a listserv discussion on this topic right now, and the
discussion is fascinating. You are invited to join in. To do so,
just click on this link: http://www.aallnet.org/prodev/listserv.asp to
subscribe. The good news is that the discussion is for two weeks, beginning
today, June 28th, but after that the listserv subscribers will be purged --
so you will not be subscribing to a permanent listserv that will fill your
mailbox with mail for ever and ever.
Join in, and hear what your colleagues will be talking about over for the
next two weeks!
