Social Responsibilities SIS Is Proud To Sponsor AALL Volunteer Opportunities
At Annual Meeting
"A Capital Contribution: Law Librarians Serving the District" is the title
for the Social Responsibilities volunteer opportunity debuting in
Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, July 21. The Social Responsibilities SIS is
sponsoring a chance for law librarians to spend time during the Annual
Meeting reading to children, trouble-shooting computers and processing books
in the D.C. Public School system.
Teams of volunteers will visit schools in two shifts - one leaving the
Convention Center after the first morning session at 10:00 a.m. and
returning by 12:30 p.m., and the second one leaving around 12:30 p.m. and
returning in time for the General Business Meeting at 3:00 p.m. You may
sign up in advance by e-mailing Karen Westwood, SR-SIS Chair at
karen.westwood@courts.state.mn.us, or you may sign up at the SR-SIS table in
the Exhibit Hall.
When asked about the benefits of a volunteer project, Carol Billings,
Director of the Law Library of Louisiana, responds, "It's good for our
profession to be seen by the community doing things for people. That
attracts good, caring people to our profession, and signals that libraries
and the justice system are valuable things".
At the Social Responsibilities SIS table in the Exhibit Hall Activities
Area, members will be collecting new books appropriate for kindergarten
through twelfth grade children. All AALL members are encouraged to purchase
one or more books to bring along in their suitcases so project volunteers
can deliver them on Wednesday, July 21. Anyone needing suggestions for
books to buy, contact Carol Billings at cbilling@lasc.org for information.
The Social Responsibilities SIS is proud to sponsor this event for AALL and
hope that many of you will join us on the 21st!
The American Association of Law Libraries was founded in 1906 to promote and
enhance the value of law libraries to the legal and public communities, to
foster the profession of law librarianship, and to provide leadership in the
field of legal information. Today, with over 4,600 members, the Association
represents law librarians and related professionals who are affiliated with
a wide range of institutions: law firms; law schools; corporate legal
departments; courts; and local, state and federal government agencies. For
more information, visit AALLNET, the official AALL web site, at
www.aallnet.org.
