Re: Agencies & Distributorships book

You don't provide enough info for me to be sure, but you seem to have
one or more pages from a directory of foreign agents and distributors
for U.S. exporters (and, perhaps, service providers).

I know (I was for a number of years a commercial attaché at various
embassies) that such a directory existed. I also know that it was
inaccurate to the degree of near-uselessness, but that's another
matter.

I happen to have at hand the "Updated list of the 'Core' Commercial
Library Reference Collection for 1993" a US Department of Commerce
circular to embassies, dated Dec. 16, 1993. I thought I might find your
book in that, but it is not. (And, I think, for good professional
reason.) It may well be, however, that whoever edits the list currently
(and I would assume the circular continues to be compiled and
circulated) would know of the directory you are seeking. In 1992, the
responsible person was Brien [sic] Smith, on (202) 482-2736, fax (202)
482-3159.

Included in the Core list is the Directory of American Firms Operating
in Foreign Countries, pub. by World Trade Academy Press, Inc., New
York, tel. (212) 697-4999, and sold for $195. My recollection of that
directory is that the publishers solicit from each US embassy their
list of US firms operating in-country (available free from most
embassies, at least through 1993); re-print them, and get $195 for
their trouble. Some, but not all, US embassy commercial sections tried
to compile lists of local agents/distributors for US exporters. Perhaps
your list is a compilation of that. If so, it is substantively
worthless, IMHO.

I hope that helps you, at least putting your book into perspective.
Commercial sections of US embassies know, more or less, who the most
active agents are for US products. In this day and age, for reasons of
improved communications and (since the 1980s) new user-fees imposed on
business users of Department of Commerce programs, fewer exporters and
local agents approach the embassy than used to be the case. So neither
the embassy nor the publisher of your directory is likely to have
complete, reliable information.

Of course some countries (Belgium and many middle-Eastern countries
come to mind) have laws that protect agents and distributors from
"unfair dismissal". Korea and some other Far Eastern countries have
very active trade associations of agents, distributors and importers.
They would be a good source for the kind of information your end-user
may be seeking.
