Since cite-checking seems to be unknown in Europe, I encounter this
problem all the time, and I handled it the way I usually do. I went to
the shelves at IALS (London) and looked at the bound volumes of Calif.
L. Rev. Sure enough, vol. 50 only goes up to page 984, more or less.
Then I looked at all volumes on the same shelf that looked as if they
might contain at least 1184 pages.

On page 1184 of volume 55 (1967), I found the following, which could be
what you're looking for:

<begin text>

X

SECURED TRANSACTIONS

A. Subordination Agreements

Handy v. Gordon...

<end text>

There are three pages of discussion of Californa law of subordination,
all within the (newly introduced that year) annual review of the work
of the Supreme Court of California.

Hope that helps.
