The University of Miami Law Library Law Librarian
The University of Miami School of Law seeks an Associate Professor/ Law
Librarian. Along with a nationally acclaimed faculty and carefully
selected student body, the Law School has an exceptional library. One
of the largest research facilities in the Southeast, the Library has
recently undergone a major expansion and thorough renovation. Its
collection comprises nearly 500,000 volumes in print and microform.
Taxation and estate planning, labor law, ocean law, environmental law,
and international law are among the special subject strengths
represented in the collection. The foreign law collection is especially
strong in the law of the European Union and Latin America, and it houses
the nation's leading collection on Caribbean law.
The Law Library (<www.law.miami.edu/library>) has 28 full time and
several part-time staff members, including 10 librarians. The annual
operating budget is well in excess of $3.5 million, of which more than a
third is devoted to acquisitions. The Law Library has a networked
information service that includes the online catalog and accesses
multiple locally mounted and external data bases at up to 600
substations. It is committed to providing a high level of service to
students and faculty of the School of Law, and also is an important
resource for lawyers in Miami and throughout Latin America and the
Caribbean.
The Law School is located in Coral Gables, one of Florida's most
desirable residential areas and an international business center in its
own right. The Miami metropolitan area has one of the most dynamic and
diverse legal communities in the country, as well as a wealth of
cultural attractions, sporting events, and natural treasures that can be
enjoyed year-round.
The Law Librarian reports to the Dean of the School of Law. It is a
tenure/tenure-track position. Qualified applicants must have a J.D. and
an M.L.S. or equivalent and substantial experience in law library
administration in a university context. Candidates must also
demonstrate a strong professional interest in playing a broader role in
law librarians' response to a wide spectrum of developments, including
rapid changes in technologies of information storage and retrieval,
consolidation of legal publishing, and changes in copyright law. Key
responsibilities of the position include: collections planning to
strengthen the Library's research focus; budgetary planning and
management; personnel recruitment, training and management; instruction
in legal research techniques; and support for research and reference
services. The Law Librarian is expected to establish close
relationships with law faculty, students, and the Dean in support of
research and educational needs, work effectively with head librarians in
other libraries at the University, and possess a full understanding of
the uses of information technology in modern libraries.
