BACKGROUND:
The Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington is part of a
large, busy academic law school serving 45 faculty, 500 JD students, 125
LL.M. students, visiting scholars, as well as the bar and general public.
It also manages an internship program for library science students
preparing for professional careers in law librarianship. Graduate
programs are heavily oriented toward international and comparative law,
including an Asian Law program. The Law Library supports the Pacific Rim
Law and Policy Journal and the Washington Law Review. The Law School
currently is located at the west end of the University's campus. A new
building is planned for occupancy in 2002 or 2003. The collection
includes 515,885 volumes, and the library is a selective federal
depository.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Reference Librarian, 1 FTE
Will join a team of reference librarians who provide wide-ranging services
to library patrons. Provides research instruction to students and
in-depth research for faculty. This team position provides many
opportunities for creativity and professional development. We look
forward to hiring an individual who is a self-starter, has a sense of
humor, and enjoys collaborating on a wide variety of projects.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:
1. Provides reference service to library patrons, including general and
legal reference, using traditional book sources, as well as computerized
systems (WESTLAW, LEXIS-NEXIS, online library catalogs, CD ROM products,
locally-loaded databases and the Internet).
2. Prepares course materials for and gives presentations in legal
bibliography/research courses in Basic Legal Skills and other Law School
courses.
3. Continually improves reference and research skills for high-quality
service.
4. Performs in-depth research for faculty, using computerized and other
resources.
5. Instructs law students on computerized systems.
6. Handles administrative projects and duties as assigned.
7. Some weekend or evening hours may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution required.
2. Two years professional law library experience required.
3. Excellent legal research skills required -- manual and online.
4. Excellent communications skills are necessary that foster effective
working relationships with staff and with faculty, students and other
library users.
5. Demonstrated teaching ability desirable.
6. JD or additional library experience desirable.
7. Writing and editing skills desirable.
BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of
Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, SAFECO Mutual
Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is
accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of
12 working days per year. Excellent medical, dental and life insurance
