TITLE: Bibliographic Access Librarian (.75% appointment)

BACKGROUND:
The Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington is part of a
large, busy academic law school serving 45 faculty, 500 JD students, 125
LLM students, visiting scholars, as well as the bar and general public. It
also manages an internship program for library science students preparing
for professional careers in law librarianship. The Law Library uses the
Innovative Interfaces software for technical processing and circulation
and has recently brought up a web-based public catalog in conjunction with
the UW Libraries system. The Law School and Law Library are presently
located at the west end of campus but anticipate moving to a new facility
in 2002 or 2003. The collection includes 515,885 volumes, and the library
is a selective federal depository.

The Technical Services Department is composed of two units: Bibliographic
Control and Bibliographic Access. The department has 12 staff members and
is responsible for the ordering, receiving, cataloging and processing of
new library materials. In addition, the department is responsible for
bibliographic projects, automated systems administration and processing
government documents.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Bibliographic Access Librarian, .75FTE
The Bibliographic Access Librarian will be responsible for the supervision
and management of the Bibliographic Access Unit, composed of original
cataloging, copy cataloging, serial continuations and processing. The
position will supervise 2.5 FTE staff positions in their daily work
assignments, including hiring, training, and evaluations. The
Bibliographic Access Librarian will be responsible for setting workflow
policy and devising procedures for the unit to ensure efficiency and
productivity.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Plans, coordinates and directs the operation of the Bibliographic
Access Unit including original cataloging, copy cataloging, authority
control and processing. Develops and maintains operational policy and
procedures for workflow in the Bibliographic Access Unit.

2. Coordinates bibliographic access activities with other library
departments/units as necessary. Serves as a resource person for staff,
students, faculty and library patrons with bibliographic questions or
problems.

3. Plans and implements portions of the Innovative Interfaces (III) module
used by the staff in the Bibliographic Access Unit. Maintains an active
role in developing policies and procedures to implement III system
enhancements and new releases. Serves as resource person for unit staff
with system implementation questions or issues. Coordinates training of
library staff on relevant aspects of III features and options. Serves as
one of the library liaisons with the library automation vendor as needed.

4. Supervises 2.5 FTE library staff, including hiring, training, coaching
and evaluating. Designs and monitors workflow, allocates staff
assignments, and provides leadership for the continuing development of
bibliographic record automation. Responsible for organizing meetings,
setting agendas and fostering communication among all staff members.

5. Serves as a member of Technical Services Department committees and
other Library committees as required.

6. Serves as the Law Library representative to campus library committees
as required. Participates in professional organizations and keeps abreast
of trends in bibliographic record management.

7. Works on special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution required.

2. Minimum two years of professional library experience required.

3. Supervisory experience and ability to work within a team environment
required.

4. Excellent communication skills that foster effective working
relationships with staff and other library departments required.

5. Academic library experience desired with law library experience
preferred.

6. Strong background in cataloging desired with serials cataloging
experience preferred

7. Knowledge of bibliographic utilities desired with RLIN experience
preferred.

8. Experience using automated library systems desired with experience with
Innovative Interfaces preferred.
