From: Ann Rae (ann.rae@utoronto.ca)
Date: Fri Mar 19 1999 - 13:45:06 PST

The Bora Laskin Law Library, University of Toronto seeks applications for
the newly created position of International and Foreign Law Librarian. This
is an excellent opportunity for an experienced lawyer/librarian to shape
collections and services in international, comparative and foreign law at a
Faculty of Law that is expanding its teaching and research in these areas.

Currently, the Library supports the teaching and research needs of 39
full-time law faculty (slated to grow to 50 over the next few years), 55
part-time adjunct professors, 510 undergraduate law students and 35-40
graduate students. Within the Faculty, course offerings are broad,
increasingly inter-disciplinary in nature and demonstrate a growing
emphasis on global and regional studies. The Library is used extensively by
other members of the University and by members of the legal profession. The
building, opened in March 1991, houses a collection of over 235,000
hard-copy volumes that includes a number of the leading legal CD-ROMs.
Extensive use is made of on-line databases such as Quicklaw, Westlaw and
Lexis/Nexis, the Internet and the University Library system's growing range
of full-text e-journal literature. The Library's Web site can be found at
http://www.law-lib.utoronto.ca.

The first tasks of the successful candidate will be to assess the Library's
current collection in foreign, comparative and international law and to
write a detailed strategy-involving both ownership and access-that responds
to defined curricular and research needs. Ongoing responsibilities will
include collection development for these subject areas, in-depth reference
and research support services for faculty and students, and participation
in the Library's instructional program as well as in the Faculty's Legal
Research and Writing courses. The librarian will also be responsible for
developing a segment of the Library's Web-based resources and services.

The successful candidate will have an MLS or equivalent from an accredited
library school and a law degree from a recognized school as well as 5-7
years of reference experience, preferably in an academic law library. The
position requires sound knowledge and expertise in the use of foreign,
comparative and international legal materials, including an understanding
of international organizations. Working knowledge of one or more languages
in addition to English is expected. This is a senior position for a dynamic
and self-motivated individual who is, nevertheless, able to work
effectively as part of the Information Services team. We are looking for
applicants with initiative, demonstrated teaching ability, excellent
communication, organizational and computer skills and the ability to
deliver high quality reference and research support. The energy and
temperament to thrive on a demanding workload will be an asset.

This "permanent status stream" position is available immediately. Both
salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The position is open to applicants of all nationalities. In accordance with
its Employment Equity Policy, the University of Toronto encourages
applications from qualified men and women, members of visible minorities,
Aboriginal Peoples and persons with disabilities.

Please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae and the names of 3
