Thanks to everyone who responded to my query. Here's how my search
progressed:

The National Association for Law Placement doesn't keep these type of
stats. Surprisingly, neither does the National Bar Association (or so I
was told).

The ABA Commission of Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession
said they could give me the stats. of black ABA members.

Black Americans: A statistical sourcebook_ (1998 edition) provides
information regarding the number of graduating black law students for
1995.

The information I was looking for was found in the Statistical Abstract
of the United States: the National Data Book, 1998 (118th edition), Page
417:
For the year of 1997
Occupation Total employed Black (percent of total)
Lawyers and judges 925,000 2.8
Lawyers 885,000 2.7

This equals 259,000 lawyers and judges, and 238,000 lawyers.
Note: This information is of the civilian population only; it excludes
military attorneys.

Again, thanks for all your help.
