Another possiblity is to donate old books to poorer countries. For example, there is an organization called Books for Africa. See http://www.sabre.org/books/BOOKORG/bkdn_bka.htm

See also the Directory of Book Donation Organizations at http://www.sabre.org/books/BOOKORG/bkdn_toc.htm

Didn't see this in your results posting, but many folks have asked me for old
volumes to use for interior decorating or for portrait photography
backgrounds. Check with interior decorating services/consultants, ad
agencies, and photography studios.

After the posting of the results, I received another helpful response to
my question concerning the recycling of hard bound books.

Brian Baker of the University of the District of Columbia School of Law

I regularly recycle a lot
of material at the University of Maryland's recycling center on their
College Park, Maryland campus. At that facility are bins for bound
books.
I've never put any there, and have never opened the top to see if they
require any preprocessing. But at least they take them. I really have
no idea how you'd contact these people other than by rooting through the

U of MD phone system until you were transferred to the right area.
It is possible that other large state schools that have recycling
programs do this as well.
Good luck, and I hope this helps.
