Dear friends and colleagues:
The LLAGNY Government Relations Committee (GRC) is underway with the start of the new session. The following is a FYI to let you know what the GRC is currently involved in and what to expect in the near future.
The LLAGNY GRC will be supporting the following proposed bills:
A727 & S1484: Appropriates funds for the establishment of library science scholarships. As you know, we aggressively supported this legislation last session, only to have the governor kill it for funding. We hope to do better this session!
A1641: provide a constitutional guarantee that the legislation shall provide for the maintenance and support of a free public library system.
S415: authorizes a tax check-off for gifts to the state library aid program for financial support for public libraries.
The following is up for discussion:
S123: Relates to the blocking or filtering of material on the Internet by public libraries and schools. This is a very sensitive and controversial issue. The LLAGNY Board has been informed and will be discussing this proposed legislation in the near future. It is important that the views of our brother and sister librarians are heard before the next board meeting. It is for this purpose, that I ask you to please e-mail your views to my attention. (keep it short and include S123 in subject line, thanks)
In the near future, the LLAGNY GRC will be posting sample letters of support to the bills sponsors, various committees and the governor. These letters will be available from the LLAGNY homepage: http://aall.wuacc.edu/chapter/llagny/index.shtml for your conveience. All you will have to do is print them out, sign, and send.
Remember, this is a great opportunity to help shape our profession and make a very positive impact. "Strength in numbers"
On behalf of the LLAGNY GRC, I would like to thank you.
