Not having a business relationship with either Carswell or Sweet &
Maxwell, perhaps I can shed some light on this.

Carswell is the North American distributor for Sweet & Maxwell. As
such, Carswell probably bears the cost of marketing and servicing the
North American market. The 50% discount that Sweet & Maxwell gives
Carswell is probably to cover some of those costs. It is not a
mark-up. The profit margin is most likely quite modest.

50% discount for new product sales was close to industry standard in '69
(19 not 18) when I entered this business and still very common,
particularly with sister companies.
