I'll take some time to answer this, because this poster's problems are
shared by many.

  1. Before giving up, try using filters to help control your e-mail, if
you are not doing so already. Your computer can handle many routine tasks
associated with your e-mail, thus making it easier for you to handle a high
volume. For example, most modern e-mail software can easily sort out all
mail from law-lib into a folder, which you can then handle at your
convenience. You can review the documentation for your e-mail software, or
check out Ken Johnson's book, The Lawyer's Quick Guide to E-mail, which has
an overview of filter use. See Ken's site, http://www.wwwscribe.com for
more information about the book, which is published by the ABA Law Practice
Management Section.

For serious business users of e-mail, filters are invaluable.

  2. As far as unsubscribing, the first step is to make sure you are
sending your message to the right address. There are typically multiple
addresses associated with any particular mailing list, the address to send
messages for distribution, the administration address, and the list owner
address:

     a. The distribution list name here is law-lib@ucdavis.edu. Don't send
unsubscribe messages here, because they will merely be distributed to all
other subscribers. They WON'T go where they need to go, the administration
address, which here is listproc@ucdavis. Make sure you follow the proper
format. If you don't remember the format, you should get an error message
that explains how to get further information. If and only if this won't
work, send your request to the list owner address, which here is
lawlist@ucdavis.edu.

All this and more useful information is outlined in the welcome message all
new subscribers receive. You should always save this for every new list you
join. Just in case you did not save it, I'm sending a copy via a separate
message
