"Legal Publishers' List - News: Matthew Bender
(8/14/98)
Matthew Bender completes it's acquisition of
Shepards, and gains a minority interest in
Versuslaw."

(Isn't Bender owned by LEXIS' parent Reed-Elsevier?)
Odd that after all this time no one has seen the text of those
2 secret agreements between West (now owned by Thomson--which controls
almost
half of the US legal publishing market--and Reed/Lexis/Bender which covers
a good part of what remains. They've admitted it exists. Admitted it was
updated in
the 90's. They are called the "Caselaw" and "Statutory" agreements
respectively.
The oddest thing? West says that even the judge that was allegedly
"supervising"
the secret agreements in Minn. doesn't have a copy of them!! (Honest!)
and now. . .
I guess you just gotta buy both to get everything. Let's see the agreements
guys!
(Just for fun, do what I do. Write "Two Secret Agreements" in the middle of
a blank white page of paper. To the left write "Lexis" to the right,
"West".
Then draw all of the companies that are owned by Reed/Lexis on one side, and
all of the
West/Thomson companies on the other. Then try to figure out what's
happening.

Subject: CRIV ALERT: LEXIS-NEXIS Announcement re Shepard's
The following CRIV Alert is being distributed through AALL and has also
been posted to several listservs to ensure wide distribution. We apologize
in advance for the inconvenience.
-------------------------------------
CRIV Alert--November 18, 1998: Several members of AALL participated this
afternoon in an "Executive Summit" via conference call with representatives
of the LEXIS-NEXIS family, including Hans Gieskes, President and CEO of
LEXIS-NEXIS, and Paul Brown, President and CEO of Matthew Bender.
Representing AALL were James Heller, President; Margaret Maes Axtmann,
President-Elect; Judy Meadows, Past President; Robert Oakley, Washington
Affairs Representative; and Frank Houdek, Chair, AALL Committee on
Relations with Information Vendors.
The purpose of the Executive Summit was to announce to and discuss with
leaders of AALL the decision that beginning July 2, 1999, the Shepard's
Citations Service will be available to online users exclusively through
LEXIS-NEXIS.
CRIV is helping alert the law library and legal communities to this
important development by distributing verbatim a LEXIS-NEXIS prepared
abbreviated version of its news release on the subject. The full text of
the release may be found on the LEXIS-NEXIS Web site listed in the text
below.

AALL Committee on Relations with Information Vendors
-------------------------------------
TEXT OF LEXIS-NEXIS RELEASE:
In the first of many planned integration actions, LEXIS-NEXIS has announced
that the Shepard's(R) Citations Service, the preeminent provider of
citations research information in the U.S. for 125 years, will be available
to online users exclusively on the LEXIS(R)-NEXIS(R) services beginning
July 2, 1999. This action will be taken in order to provide customers with
the currentness and quality expected from Shepard's.
According to Nicholas R. Emrick, vice president and general manager,
LEXIS(R) Online Publishing, "LEXIS-NEXIS is committed to ensuring Shepard's
users get the most comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date version
available. For several years, our competitor has provided a version of
Shepard's Citations Service which is only updated once a month and does not
include the full Shepard's product. Our competitor offers Shepard's
coverage of only 19 of the 50 state statutes and does not include the
popular Shepard's Signal feature, which quickly indicates the precedential
value of a case. By contrast, Shepard's Citations Service on the
LEXIS-NEXIS services is updated daily with the full Shepard's analysis."
Legal researchers are reminded that you can only Shepardize(R) using the
Shepard's Citations Service, and you can only do a thorough job of that
using Shepard's on LEXIS-NEXIS, Internet, CD-ROM or in print.
