Laura:
As a Private Law Librarian, who is a member of both SLA and AALL, I find
your idea of coordinating the annual meetings back-to-back and combining
exhibtors to be very desirable for the following reasons:
1) SLA has a very intensive focus on Management Issues and Training
which would benefit AALL members across the board.
2) SLA has, by far, one of the best Exhibit Halls with more vendors and
more different kinds of vendors. In the private sector where a majority
of reference requests are for non-legal information, this diversity of
vendors is crucial. Also, since the market is larger for the corporate
world than for the legal world, the exhibitors include software and
hardware vendors as well. These types of vendors have been lacking at AALL.
Of course, mondo planning and coordinating efforts will have to take take
place between the two national staffs. The meetings will need to be in
very large cities to acommodate the throngs. It may impact on the
cost to attendees. On the positive side, there will be less wear and
tear on speakers who often speak at both venues. The vendors will save
some bucks. It sounds like a win/win situation to me. Now, if only we
could get ASIS to join us!
