Virginia:

You need to be more specific about what kind of data. The highest level
of sophistication is called "knowledge management," and down a little is
document management (like PC Docs); then down at the bottom (simple) is
a relational database like SQL, Oracle and (I think) MS Access. I
haven't used it, but it is very minimal.

If your data includes different types of documents (spreadsheets,
orders, word-processing documents, and images, faxes, drawings, etc) you
need a high end, robust system (and you should get a consultant to work
on it.

On the other hand, if your data can be input into specific "fields"
something low-tech like Access probably is fine.

I have a client in the knowledge management business, high end, for
legal info. I can put you in touch with them (with their permission).
And I don't mind ansering more specific questions./
