My apologies for failing to paste on the information
with my previous information. It is from Edupage:

HONORARY SUBSCRIBER: S.R. RANGANATHAN
Today's Honorary Subscriber is S.R.Ranganathan (1892-1972), the great
Indian library scientist who developed the influential Colon
Classification system for organizing large research libraries. Trained
as a mathematician, he became the first librarian at the University of
Madras and also taught at other major Indian universities. Recognizing
that a classification had to be able to grow organically in order to
keep up with an always-expanding growth in knowledge, Ranganathan's
classification system uses colons and other punctuation marks as a way
of breaking knowledge down into broad classes which were then subdivided
into more elements or characteristics which he called "facets." The
entire collection of individual facets can be expanded to provide a
unique description of a particular book. An example of Ranganathan's
Colon Classification system (courtesy of Aimee Glassel and Harold Way)
is L,45;421:6;253:f.44'N5, which describes "Research in the cure of the
tuberculosis of lungs by x-ray conducted in India in 1950s," and can
be restated in words as
"Medicine,Lungs;Tuberculosis:Treatment;X-ray:Research.India'1950."
Ranganathan is also well known in information and library science
for his "Five Laws of Library Science" (1931), which are:

Books are for use.
Every reader his book.
Every book its reader.
Save the time of the reader.
A library is a growing organism."

End of quote.
