AALL membership -- reply to "missing in action"

Hello Karen Mahnk --

Thanks for your message. I'm sorry you've had trouble with your listing in
the AALL Directory. The good news is: I checked with Peter Beck, who edits
the Directory, and he tells me you are confirmed as listed in this year's
(forthcoming) edition.

The not-so-good news is the reason you are not listed this year: your dues
weren't paid until September 2, 1997. That's months after the 6/1 start of
the membership year and many more months after invoices (not to mention
reminder notices) were mailed out. The Bylaws prohibit us from removing
non-paying members from the rolls until 8/1, but obviously we cannot carry
non-paying members perpetually. Mostly we're glad your dues got paid and
you're continuing as a member.

Gilberto Fort maintains a separate membership, and if you are getting his
mail, that is a problem with the mail delivery at your end; we send all
member mailings to both you and Dr. Fort.

I hope this clarifies the matter. Please don't hesitate to call or send
e-mail if you have any questions.

Regards,
Caryn Jones

Hello all :-);
For three-plus years I've been here as research librarian for the Dade
County Public Defender's Office &
by now I feel *very "lost". No - it's not from hurricane Georges which
pretty much passed us by, but
You see, I have been a member of AALL for over 15 yrs but *disappeared from
the AALL directory when I took this *very busy position.
First, it was the delay in membership renewal - I missed the deadline. Then
somehow, someone else's named was switched w/ mine & again for 1998, I am
nowhere to be found in the AALL directory: While Mr. Gilberto Fort *is the
Librarian @ the Dade County Justice Bldg., just next store - he is *not
affiliated w/ our office.

I suppose after being a AALL member for so long, I'm a little insecure about
being "lost in cybrarian space" . I've contacted AALL each time I noticed
the omission, however I must include that I do not know what/who made the
error - AALL or the sunny State of Florida(who actually disburses our
office's payments)
Nevertheless,
after rec. yet *another piece of correspondence addressed to Mr. Fort, I
thought it worth entering my own correction by way of the lawlib list while
also asking AALL to confirm.

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone else that has also had
similar experiences.

Now, back to our "regularly scheduled program" !

Karen
