Dear Colleagues:

I beg your indulgence in posting this announcement of the release on
Sept. 19th of the third and latest edition of the "Legal Information
Buyer's Guide and Reference Manual, 1998-99."

Over seven months and hundreds of hours in the editorial process, the
1998-99 edition is a comprehensive updating and expansion of the 1997-98
edition. Now 702 pages in length (versus 587 pp. in the previous ed.),
the book contains a number of significant enhancements. Chief among
these is a dramatic expansion in the number of legal treatises and other
subject specialty materials reviewed in chapter 26, now numbering more
than 1,000 (up from 610). Six new subject areas have been added (class
actions, computer law, construction law, elder law, health and hospital
law, and judges and judicial conduct), bringing the total number of
subject areas to 54.

The text has also been updated from cover to cover to reflect all major
developments in the legal publishing industry through the AALL Annual
meeting in July. Where necessary, every bibliographical entry has been
updated to reflect its new ownership or imprint. And all prices have
been verified and updated throughout the text and another year's
supplementation costs added. Most entries feature 3-4 year's worth of
supplementation costs (1995 thru 1997 or 98) as aid to budgeting.
Moreover, each of the more than 1,000 titles in the legal treatise
chapter is reflected in an expanded 26-page spreadsheet of basic
bibliographical and pricing information for rapid comparision of
competing titles. The State legal Publications has also been completely
updated, complete with updated product costs. Prices are included for
better than 98% of the CD-ROM titles contained in this chapter and
throughout the book.

And in response to a growing number of requests to photocopy selected
portions for either educational or internal law firm use, we grant
permission to all our customers to make appropriate, non-commercial uses
of the book as they see fit. Of course, I would be pleased to hear of
how you are making use of the book, but a response is not necessary.
This offer is extended to library school educators, paralegal program
instructors, law faculty, and law firm librarians, to name just a few.
For example, some libraries have made copies of the product spreadsheet
available to patrons, others the chapter on used lawbooks (with attached
list of dealers), others, the state legal bibliographies, etc.

As with the previous edition, a free, mid-year supplement will be
mounted on our Web site in February, 1999. See: http:rilp.web2010.com

With the dramatic consolidation of the legal publishing industry in
recent years, coupled with rising prices, users and consumers of legal
information must have the tools to make wise and cost-effective
selections from the vast array of legal information products currently
available. Let the "Legal Information Buyer's Guide
and Reference Manual" be your secret weapon in the battle to acquire the
best legal publications at the lowest possible price.

Since its introduction in 1996, the Legal Information Buyer's Guide and
Reference Manual has been enthusiastically received by all segments of
the legal and library communities. Reviews have been unanimous in their
praise: "Law Practice Management" lauded it as "a monumental resource"
and "a product of rare expertise and scholarship." "Law Books in
Review" described it as the "most comprehensive single-volume guide to
legal information resources available today." "Law Library Journal"
named it to its list of the "Best Legal Reference Books of 1996." A
review in the June, 1998 issue "Legal Information Alert" by Sharon
Peregrine Johnson said: "If you have limited funds and can only purchase
one book a year, this is a must." And the 1997-98 edition received the
1998 Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographic Award, the highest honor bestowed
by the American Association of Law Libraries on works of legal
