Summary: Legal Notice Placement

My sincere thanks to all who took the time to answer my question about
the choice of periodical for publication of legal notices. It appears,
as I suspected might be the case, that there is no definitive source
which lists where one *must* publish. Below, I have quoted from the
responses I received:

"For posting legal notices, generally the COUNTY of the town for your
address will tell you the newspapers of record for that county. the
town
clerk may also have the same address. I think it depends on the level of
publication you wish..that is, the level of the audience. I think I have
simply called towns before. Sometimes the town newspaper of record is a
paper of very limited circulation (in the eyes of a librarian) but
perfectly legal. We sometimes make our determination based on costs of
the
ad after finding out which publications we can use."

"Nathan's Legal Markets (a print directory) lists Court & Commercial
Newspapers."

"[T]he public library in that geographical area would know (or would
find out for you)
which local papers meet the criteria for this sort of thing."

"I have seen legal notices in all of the New York papers (the New York
Law
Journal, of course, but also the New York Times, the Daily News, the New
York Post and New York Newsday (which is mainly Long Island). Someone
here
told me that usually the judge requiring the legal notice will tell you
what
publication to run the notice in."

"I was a law librarian IN for about 17 yrs and those notices were
routinely
placed in "legal" newspapers."

"As I recall from being a law clerk many moons ago, it doesn't matter
what paper the notice is put in. Granted, most defendants won't read
NYLJ or the Chicago law paper (which is what I was putting ads in). The
only requirement is that, failing to find the person against whom the
action is being taken, the attorney must provide proof of publication."

Thank you all again for coming through for me!
