Ron Huttner et al--
I think Pres. Clinton's situation is very relevant for Australian voters.
The Australian federal elections next week will decide the makeup
of Australia's government at an important time in Austrialian history.
The upcoming government will impact directly the 1999 Australian
constitutional vote (on changing the head-of-state in Australia from
the Queen to a 5-year *President* appointed by Parliament).
Australia's vote next year on the best way to organize their republic,
and what to do when their head-of-state disappoints the country's
expectations or morals, may in some measure depend on how well
the United States treats our own President in trouble. And, it'll depend
on what Australia's government (elected next week) does too.
Does Australia handle its governmental scandals as openly as USA?
Does their government print reports critical of the Prime Minister,
Governor-General, or Queen and ship them to public libraries around
the country (like the US GPO is doing with the Starr Report)?
My $.02. (That would be $.03 ½ in Australian dollars.)
