Subject: Missouri Ruling/Dred Scott (1847) -Reply

Dear Ms. Bowman:

This is in response to your inquiry to GOVDOC-L regarding the availability
of the original court records from the "Dred Scott Decision." In the
Records of the District Courts of the United States (Record Group 21),
located at the NARA's Central Plains Region (Kansas City), are records
of the Dred Scott decision. Specifically, they are the records of the
Missouri, Eastern District Court, 1857-1965. The records include cases
relating to Chinese exclusion; confiscation of property belonging to
Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War era; liquidation of national
banks, 1888-1894; violations of internal revenue laws; as well as
admiralty, bankruptcy, civil, and criminal cases. "Dred Scott" v.
"Sanford"
and "Dearborn Independent" (publication owned by Henry Ford) v. "City
Officials of St. Louis, Missouri," are among the historically significant
cases.

For further information about available records, contact the Central
Plains
Region (Kansas City), 312 East Bannister Road, Kansas City, Missouri
64131-3011. The telephone number is 816-926-6920; E-mail:
center@kansascity.nara.gov, and Fax: 816-926-6982. The homepage is
located at http://www.nara.gov/regional/kansas.html.

I have a patron looking for the Missouri ruling of the Dred Scott Decision
in 1847. We've found Circuit Court information from 1856, but she needs
the
original document from 1847. The ruling may also be referred to as the
Scott/Sandford Decision or Ruling.

If anyone has any ideas on where I might find this document, please
respond
directly to me at <ebowman@hollins.edu>. Thanks a bunch.
