Dan,

You make a good point. I knew about the $5 "per document" rate, but hadn't thought it through to its logical conclusion -- but then printing is included in my flat-rate agreement with Westlaw, so I tend not to think about it that much. Also, I've never known any of our attorneys or paralegals to print just one page of a case. It's been "all-or-nothing", in my experience.

Thanks.

As of July 1, 1998, Westlaw has been charging $5 per document for
cases and law review articles. What their notification letter didn't say,
is that if you print any part of the document, e.g., the first page, you get
charged for the whole document. This is outrageous and unfair.
A fair charge for the first page of a case would be in the $1-$2 range.
As it is now, it doesn't pay not to print out the whole case the first time,
because you're paying for it anyway. If you print out the first page and
later decide you want the whole case, you've doubled your cost. Was
anyone else caught as unaware about this as I was?

West, if you're listening, this situation needs to change.
