CRIVGram--September 8, 1998. CRIV is please to distribute the following
message concerning duplicate issues of West pamphlets. Please excuse cross
postings.

Librarian Jill Henderson, Taylor County Law Library, Abilene TX , recently
contacted West to obtain a return label for an unwanted duplicate item.
After some delay and argument with the customer service representative, Jill
was sent the mailing label, but was also informed that West expects
customers to retain multiple copies of the same item if the item is issued
in conjunction with different West publications.

In the present case, one copy of a pamphlet dealing with a new tax law was
shipped to Jill's library as part of the library's subscription to Am Jur2d
and a second copy of the very same pamphlet was shipped as part of the
subscription to USCA.

Evidently West's position is that a researcher using USCA will not
necessarily think to use a pamphlet in the Am Jur set , in which case
providing an identical pamphlet with USCA is doing the researcher a favor.
Therefore they believe it is necessary to issue pamphlets with each set.

Jill was told that in the future the cost of returning items issued as part
of a West subscription would have to be borne by the returning library.

CRIVGrams from the AALL Committee for Relations with Information Vendors are
intended to inform librarians about issues concerning publishers. Questions
should be addressed to Frank Houdek, CRIV Chairman, 618-453-8788,
houdek@siu.edu.
