Our policy requires our summer associates as well as all attorneys and
paralegals new to our firm to go through training or, if they have had the
training in the past, a refresher class before they can receive their
passwords. We do order their passwords as soon as we have information of
their pending arrival and have them ready for delivery upon the attorney's
/ paralegal's completion of the training. This allows us to reiterate the
pricing structure for both databases and to stress the use of the 800
numbers available.

We are curious to find out if there is a consensus about when Lexis IDs and
Westlaw passwords are given to law firm summer associates. Does your firm
require attendance at training before the ID/PW are distributed or are the
PW/ID distributed during orientation? Perhaps there is another arrangement
at your firm. I know the arguments for both options (distribution pre v.
post training) but would be happy to hear any rationale that works at your
shop. I'll summarize for the list and will remove firm names, so it would
be
helpful to indicate the # lawyers in your firm or office and I'll add the
